Here are some additional set pieces I created for The King and I.  All of the architectural works were created from my original renderings by a local production house, and were finished by hand painting.  The white elephants are also original paintings.

I'm excited to finally be able to share the set and production designs I did for Yew Chung International School's production of The King and I.  This was such a challenging project, but seeing the final results come to life on stage with the talented student actors made it all worthwhile.  I'll share more photos of the additional set pieces I designed in the coming days.

STYLIN': Personal Expressions of Beauty

We're at it again!  A hair salon isn't the first place you'd think of to check out local art, but LaBelle Salon in Central Hong Kong is no stranger to the scene.  In the past it has hosted live graffiti shows, DJ performances, and more recently, Tangled, a group art exhibition that took place in 2009.  You can check out more on that show here.  As the curator of Tangled, I'm excited to once again join forces with the LaBelle Salon team to bring together a diverse group of artists for an exhibition that explores the elements of beauty from a personal point of view.

STYLIN' asks: If our hairstyles express who we are, and who we want to be, does art follow suit?  How does an artist's choice of color or subject matter shed light on deeper meaning within a work?  Are hairstylists themselves artists of a sort?

In STYLIN': Personal Expressions of Beauty, six artists showcase their very different works. Installation artist and sculptor Movana Chen weaves paper into dreamy organic forms; while illustrator, makeup artist, and founder of her own label Wahahaha Factory, May Sum showcases her colorful characters and the imaginary world they inhabit.  Ronan Leung, a graphic designer and illustrator, uses punchy color combinations in his quirky illustrations, and illustrator Emily Eldridge's fashionable characters are cheeky females with an edge.  Spanish shoe designer Hermenegildo Muxart showcases his brand of luxury shoes under his 22-year-old internationally recognized label Muxart Barcelona, while painter Wesley Terpstra explores his attraction to local Hong Kong ephemera through his stenciled abstract painting series.

Join us for the opening reception of the exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 10th, from 7:00-10:00pm at LaBelle Salon.  Address is listed above.

Set up.

Slaving over architectural renderings has its rewards!  (As an illustrator who loves loopy organic shapes, I can't think of a harder challenge!)  I've spent the last several weeks designing what you see above.  And finally it's no longer a sketch on paper, but a physical set (and so close to my original drawings, I can hardly believe it).  Any guesses as to what musical we'll be doing?  I suppose only theater geeks out there might have a clue.

WANTED for Lane Crawford

I illustrated this season's "It Girls" for the recently relaunched Lane Crawford website
"Known to the fashion mob by their distinctive nickname, must-have reputation, and iconic style, five renegade forces are the talk of the town for Autumn/Winter 2011... Catch them if you can!"
Each illustration features an "It" look for the A/W 2011 season from the respective designers' collections.  You can check out the full illustrations and the rest of the article here.

Hmm, time to do some shopping?

The Universal Language

A new piece for the Music Department at Yew Chung International School of Beijing.  A play on the idea that young or old, ancient or modern, everyone can enjoy music.  Look at the piece closely and you'll recognize some elements of ancient Beijing (hutongs) and modern (CCTV Tower along with other future planned additions to the Beijing skyline).

Limited Edition Gift Card for Lane Crawford

Here in Asia, Mid-Autumn Festival is on its way in! Feels like it's still summer - who can believe it's time for fall, a full moon celebration, and the lantern festival already?  I created a Limited Edition Gift Card for Lane Crawford stores to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.  It's now available in stores in Hong Kong and China.  Check it out online, along with what else is in store here.

NewWebPick Interview

Awhile back, I did an interview for e-zine NewWebPick.  Finally, the interview is out in Issue 35!  Most of the work featured is art I've done over the past few years.  You can download the current issue here at http://ezine.newwebpick.com/.  Or take a look at the rest of my interview after the jump.  The images are a bit small, but you can click on them individually to expand them.

Baby Bear

I do animal illustrations all too infrequently, but I think I need to make them more often!  This piece is is a private commission for a friend's new baby.  The colors used were matched to the child's room.
