The hills are alive...

...with The Sound of Music!

One of the perks of my day job is to work on the set design for the annual school musical.  This is Yew Chung International School's 80th Anniversary year, so it's no surprise that the classic tale was a top choice for this year's performance.

It's always interesting to try to incorporate my skills as an illustrator and a painter into something 3-dimensional (let's just say, precise architectural drawings are not my forte), but I must admit, the more I practice, the easier all that technical stuff is.  And even with something quite rigid in structure like the old Austrian manor and monastery found in The Sound of Music, using color and pattern can help give things a bit of punch and add to my artistic vision.

Here's a little recap of the performance (featuring our super-talented Primary & Secondary school student actors!) and the finished set designs below.

DACS Reclaim

It's not often I get to team up with designers, illustrators, and artists from around the world to do something useful, so I was privileged to join forces with DACS - Designers Against Child Slavery at their recent exhibition in New York City.  DACS is a US-based non-profit group that invites artists from all over the world to utilize their unique skill sets and talents to raise awareness about the world's sex trade, as well as to create a source of funding for the prevention and restoration of survivors of trafficking.

Art and design is a such a powerful form of communication, and DACS is dedicated to using it to bring change to the world. With over 2 million children alone enslaved in the global sex trade, making a difference seems to be a daunting task, but there is hope!  In partnership with The Blind Project, DACS recently hosted an art exhibition entitled Reclaim on December 3rd in New York City.  Out of the numerous artistic contributions from around the globe, all of the artworks sold!  It's incredibly exciting that art can be used to raise awareness and to make a change.  Thanks again to DACS; I'm thrilled that I could be a part of this.

Christmas Cookies for Lane Crawford!

I'm not sure how December came so soon this year (really, how does time fly by so quickly), but it's officially Christmas season!  With the holidays upon us, I designed (uhh, not baked!) some Christmas cookies for Lane Crawford's Shopping Weekend a few weeks back.  Trust me, I'm not as skilled in the baking department as I am with a brush and paint (or Photoshop in this case), so a few local bakeries interpreted my designs into crispy sugar cookies with cheery frosting and fondant.  Here's my illustrated alphabet (in cookie form!) and a peek at Lane Crawford's gorgeous Christmas displays below.  Photos taken by me, but thanks to Lane Crawford for letting me happily snap away at my designs and their displays!

MISCHA 4th Anniversary

Here's a little peek at what I've been up to recently.  Hong Kong designer Michelle Lai of MISCHA and I got together to do a little collaboration for her bag & luggage brand's 4th Anniversary.  Using MISCHA's signature honeycomb pattern, I created a series of wanderlust-inspired illustrations to go along with the theme for the 4th Anniversary event.  My illustrations feature the globetrotting MISCHA girl in some of her favorite cities - Hong Kong, Tokyo, Rome, London, New York, and Paris!  Each illustration also features a different bag from the MISCHA collection.

The night of the event had a huge turnout, with guests enjoying all the prerequisites for a great party - shopping, nibbles, fabulous cocktails, and of course, a photobooth!  Blogger and author Geneva Vanderzeil of A Pair and a Spare held a fun DIY session using MISCHA's vintage obi fabrics, and we also held a silent auction for the illustrations, with proceeds going towards MISCHA'S chosen charity, Mother's Choice.  Four out of six pieces sold on the night, and bids for Tokyo and London (pictured directly below) are still open!

Sugar Rush!

Sugar Rush! Here's my second mural for Bloom Cafe in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  I added a much-needed pop of color to the walls in the Baking Room - art on a wall definitely sweetens things up!  I can't imagine more ideal circumstances for painting either - wafts of cakes, chocolate, and sweet stuff in the air all day long - and mid-afternoon snacks of cake pops, frosting samples, cookies, and of course, Bloom's specialty, cupcakes!  Be sure to pop by Bloom Cafe if you're ever in Phnom Penh.  (I can't promise they'll let you in the Baking Room for samples, but their well-stocked cupcake counter should plenty satisfy your sweet tooth!)

Cupcake Crazy!

Cupcake crazy, indeed.  This past July, I traveled to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to give a bit of color to the walls of Bloom Cafe!  Bloom Cafe is highly acclaimed in Phnom Penh for their incredible cakes, delicious cupcakes (with about a million flavors to choose from!), and baked goods of all kinds.  A must-visit hangout spot (and the perfect place to cool down from that Southeast Asian heat!) if you find yourself in Phnom Penh.

Ellermann Market Window

Here's another fun project I worked on this past summer.  Ellermann Flower Boutique & Atelier asked me to create a window painting for their Summer Market Event this past July.  I based my design on one of the illustrations I created for their website (see the blog post below this one), scribbling bouquets of flowers, potted plants, crates of herbs, bumblebees, flower pots, and a big banner to top it all off!

Some photos of me in action (and the finished window after the jump) below:

Service & Ordering at Ellermann
The Ellermann Team

Whew! It's been ages since my last update, but I have a lot of exciting projects from this past summer to share in the coming days and weeks.  Bear with me while I sort through mountains of photos and projects!

In the meantime, here are some illustrations I recently completed for Ellermann Boutique & Atelier, one of my favorite flower shops in Hong Kong.  The Ellermann team asked for illustrations that could liven up their website, and add a bit of a friendly flair to their online presence.  Check out their updated site here, and be sure to check out my illustrations on the Service & Ordering, Who We Are, and Boutique pages. (A sneak preview above if you're too lazy to click through!)
