Tie Your Shoes!

Here's my latest interactive artwork, intended as a game and teaching tool for kids.  Children are encouraged to interact with this mixed media painting (painted on a wooden board, with holes drilled for string) by practicing tying their shoe laces.  I tried to create a wide variety of shoe sizes, to symbolize the types of shoes that would be worn by a family.

The Wizard of Oz

It's always a blast working on the set designs for YCIS, and this year was no different.  The Secondary School here in Hong Kong put on a production of the classic The Wizard of Oz.   I designed the sets, which were built and finished by a local production house, with the exception of a few pieces which my team and I hand-painted.

Hope you enjoy this glimpse into the land of Oz!

Poster Feature in Thomas Cook Travel

I'm a complete travel junkie, and love hopping onto a plane whenever I can!  So I'm excited to have my Hong Kong poster featured in the latest issue of Thomas Cook Travel Magazine, an in-flight magazine for UK-based Thomas Cook Airlines.

I created this poster a few years back for the Hong Kong edition of Show Us Your Type, an online magazine that brings together typography, travel, and graphic design based on the world's great cities.

You can read a bit about my inspiration for the piece below.

And of course, check out Show Us Your Type for more fantastic graphic design, typography, and illustration!

Hong Kong Society of Illustrators

Have I mentioned that I'm a member of the HKSI?  Better known as the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators?

You can check out my page and some other local illustrators' work on the HKSI website here: http://www.illustrator.org.hk

And yes, I need to update my page.  One thing at a time, ok?  :)

Beauty Grows Here for Caudalie

Well, aren't we Hong Kong girls lucky!  French skincare brand Caudalie will be opening its first boutique right here this November.  Caudalie is renowned for their natural and environmentally friendly active ingredients, which are all sourced from vine and grape extracts from the vineyards of Bordeaux, Champagne, & Burgundy, France. I worked together with Caudalie to create a little stop-motion animation to promote their new store opening (which by the way, is on Gough Street in the Sheung Wan neighborhood).

And here's a few pics from behind-the-scenes.

Sabor y Ver / Taste and See - New Mural for Mesa 15!

This has probably been one of my favorite wall murals to date.  Mesa 15 (a fantastic Spanish / tapas restaurant here in Hong Kong) asked me to paint their walls for their relocation from Hollywood Road to the heart of Lan Kwai Fong.  They're now at 6/F, Grand Progress Building, 15-16 Lan Kwai Fong, Central.  If you're in Hong Kong, it's most definitely a must-try!  Seriously awesome Spanish food.

Anyways, on to the mural - I tried to inject a little flavor of Spain into the mural design (bright, sunny colors; bold, graphic pattern, some sneaky references to Picasso and Miro, and sexy Spanish gals soaking up the sun!)  I can only hope the walls speak for the deliciousness of the food inside.

Illustrations for Tangram x Jaycow

Ok, I may be slightly partial to Hong Kong-based label, Tangram (they are friends of mine, after all), but even if we didn't know each other personally, I think I'd still be saving my pennies to purchase one of their gorgeous garments each season!  (Please guys, can you do a line of shoes next?)

Now, if you know me well, you'll also be aware of my slight addiction to headscarves.  So when Paola & Ignacio asked me to create some fashion illustrations featuring their latest collaboration of head wraps with Jaycow Millinery, I couldn't have had a more fun assignment!  The two labels have dug into their personal collections of vintage and ethnic textiles to create one-of-a-kind head wraps for any stylish gal who wants to make a statement.  I'm sure you'll love them as much as I do.  Check out my illustrations below.  And to view (or purchase) the pieces, click here.  The "Robin" in African print is my personal fave!  I know I'll be wearing it with anything and everything.

Forest Friends

Blog posts looong overdue!  I'll be updating with a few of my recent projects over the coming weeks.

Here's a fun new kid-friendly mural I created for Yew Chung International School of Hong Kong's Year 1 campus.  I turned a bland, boring hallway into a colorful forest space - complete with falling leaves, quirky illustrative trees, and brightly-painted branches.  The mural is perfect as a backdrop for displaying student artwork in a variety of themes, and livens up a once-bare stairwell.  Plus, it makes school a whole lot more fun for the kids who get to walk past it every day!

Take a peek below.

GLOW Feature at MaitsPaints

Maita over at maitspaints.tumblr.com, a Hong Kong-based blog (check it out!) did a little feature on me and my favorite summer beauty products!  She does a regular column on the blog called GLOW, featuring the beauty secrets of her friends and other Hong Kong creatives. Have a peek at her lovely illustrations (and my must-haves) on the post here. (You can have a sneak peek below.)

The Gift Shop at Chai Wan Mei

For the second year, local fashion label Tangram is co-organizing Chai Wan Mei; an arts and design event that takes place in the Chai Wan district during Art Basel Hong Kong.  During this 2 day event, their studio will be transformed into The Gift Shop, a pop up concept shop with a selection of Hong Kong based independent designers, illustrators, photographers, publishers and other creatives curated by Tangram.

I'll have some of my work for sale at The Gift Shop, so do pop in for a chance to purchase one of my originals!

There will be a shuttle bus service from the Art Basel Hong Kong site, so there are no excuses to miss the most talked about satellite event of the art fair.  See you then!

夜好趁墟行動 The Night Market Project

If you're in Hong Kong, you should stop by this great event tonight!  A one-of-a-kind shopping experience...

I'll be taking part, along with a huge list of other Hong Kong artists and designers.

The Night Market Project is a creative and experimental platform relating to Hong Kong's unique night market culture.  Starting at Sham Shui Po Night Market, a group of Hong Kong creatives and students will exhibit a collection of objects of cultural interest, prototypes, and old and new design work.  These affordable objects will be exhibited and sold alongside other markets.

The project aims to create conversations relating to the value of objects, the role of night markets in urban environments, and the responsibility of creatives in Hong Kong today.  Participating creatives include Jeff Wan from Shoe Artistry, Michael from HK Honey, students from various design schools in Hong Kong, and many others.

For more info, check out the Facebook event page here.

Lettering Love...

Flash!

Who knew good handwriting could pay off?  I not only appreciate tidy writers, good fonts, beautiful signs, type and text of all sorts, but I also have so much fun playing around with illustrating letterforms and all their variations.    This is some type I've been working on for an upcoming event at the school.  I don't know if this will be accepted for the final version, but I'm loving the direction it's headed so far...

Mint Chocolate Chip

Add caption
It's probably obvious by now that I'm a sucker for anything with stripes.  So of course I was drooling over the Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013 collections - stripes in every size and color!  A little bit of fashion inspiration found its place in this new private commission for a friend - Mint Chocolate Chip.
