This was such a challenging project, but seeing the final results come to life on stage with the talented student actors made it all worthwhile. STYLIN': Personal Expressions of Beauty

We're at it again! A hair salon isn't the first place you'd think of to check out local art, but LaBelle Salon in Central Hong Kong is no stranger to the scene. In the past it has hosted live graffiti shows, DJ performances, and more recently, Tangled, a group art exhibition that took place in 2009. You can check out more on that show here. As the curator of Tangled, I'm excited to once again join forces with the LaBelle Salon team to bring together a diverse group of artists for an exhibition that explores the elements of beauty from a personal point of view.

STYLIN' asks: If our hairstyles express who we are, and who we want to be, does art follow suit? How does an artist's choice of color or subject matter shed light on deeper meaning within a work? Are hairstylists themselves artists of a sort?

In STYLIN': Personal Expressions of Beauty, six artists showcase their very different works. Installation artist and sculptor Movana Chen weaves paper into dreamy organic forms; while illustrator, makeup artist, and founder of her own label Wahahaha Factory, May Sum showcases her colorful characters and the imaginary world they inhabit. Ronan Leung, a graphic designer and illustrator, uses punchy color combinations in his quirky illustrations, and illustrator Emily Eldridge's fashionable characters are cheeky females with an edge. Spanish shoe designer Hermenegildo Muxart showcases his brand of luxury shoes under his 22-year-old internationally recognized label Muxart Barcelona, while painter Wesley Terpstra explores his attraction to local Hong Kong ephemera through his stenciled abstract painting series.

Slaving over architectural renderings has its rewards! (As an illustrator who loves loopy organic shapes, I can't think of a harder challenge!) I've spent the last several weeks designing what you see above. And finally it's no longer a sketch on paper, but a physical set (and so close to my original drawings, I can hardly believe it). Any guesses as to what musical we'll be doing? I suppose only theater geeks out there might have a clue.

Body Builder - a new mural I recently completed outside the Science Department classrooms here at YCIS.

I lead our school's Secondary School Mural Club, and this year, Year 13 students Rosalyn Ng, Peony Heung, Charles Hung, Stephen Lau, and Herbert Cheng worked collaboratively with me over several months on the mural's design and colors.

When it came time for painting, my good friend and fellow artist Wesley Terpstra helped the students and I to lay out the design and base colors on the wall. The rest of the painting and line work took me over 3 weeks to complete! (Not to mention the hours spent in Photoshop piecing together the hundreds of photos required to create a single image of the entire painting.)

Our concept was inspired by vintage science book covers, and we wanted to showcase science and the bodily systems in an artistic way. We chose to paint this in a narrow hallway instead of a more open space so that the mural would act as a sort of visual surprise as you walk down the main hallways. From either end of the mural, you will first only see the head or the feet. As you turn the corner and continue down the hallway, you see the rest. We thought this would be a more interactive way for viewers to encounter the space. Nevertheless, this obviously creates a bit of a problem when trying to take a photo of the whole wall! See if you can spot the circulatory, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and digestive systems!

Godspell Set Design

A few months ago, I created the set design for the YCIS version of the 1970s musical classic Godspell. Director Alan Nazareno's modern take on the show called for a gritty, urban setting, so I created a huge graffiti wall using words at the central tenet of the musical's theme. I can never profess to be as great a graffiti writer as some of my idols in the art world, but for my first time using a spray can, I think it turned out pretty well! The amount of work required to write "letters" is incredible, and let it be said, I have a huge amount of respect for graffiti writers following this!

A Peek Inside SCAD Hong Kong

I'm thrilled to share that my work is part of the permanent collection of my alma mater, The Savannah College of Art & Design, at the new campus of SCAD Hong Kong! Here's a peek inside their visitor reception area. SCAD Hong Kong is located in the former Kowloon Magistracy Building in Sham Shui Po. Well worth a visit if you're in the area! Not only do they have an impressive collection of art on display, the historic preservation of the building and the interior design are inspiration alone!

A Modement Collaboration

As part of the Sweet & Sour exhibition, I collaborated with local designer Modement on a series of handbags, which are now on display at the New Gallery on Old Bailey. All bags are up for silent auction, with proceeds going to local charities here in Hong Kong.

Modement head designer Aries has hand-sewn 8 totes, each made of raw canvas with black silk lining and funky woven handles. All prints are my design, and hand-drawn on each tote. Hopefully there's a few left at the gallery - stop by soon if you're interested in one - they're going fast!

I'm a little late on posting this, but I'm doing an Illustration workshop for students at SCAD Hong Kong (Wyndham Street location) tomorrow afternoon. I think it's too late to sign up, but I'm looking forward to meeting those who will be attending! I'll be sharing some of my personal artwork, and we'll also explore some illustrative styles and do an illustration-based activity.
